Set in the future, Dune centers on Paul Atreides. His family is the esteemed House Atreides. They are drawn into a conflict for control over the desert planet Arrakis. Rivals clash over the planet’s valuable and scarce resources. Only those who can confront their deepest fears stand a chance of survival.
Part 2 was released a few days back. Fans might be wondering if they could visit Arrakis. Sadly, Arrakis is a fictional planet. In this series, Sky Bird Travel will list some of Dune movie sets that fans can visit in real life!
Dune Shooting Locations
Origo film studios, Budapest
The film was based at the sound stages in Origo Studios in Budapest, Hungary. It is the same one used for creating Blade Runner 2049. Origo Studios stands as one of Hungary’s largest movie studios. It boasts nine soundstages and 18,000 square meters of space.
During production, the film used impressive sets and effects. This minimized the use of green screens. Full-scale models of the dragonfly-like ‘Thopter’ or ‘Ornithopter’ aircraft were constructed at the studios.
Dune: Part Two filmed its grand battle sequences on these sets. There are several attractions nearby to visit near the studios.
Wadi Rum, Jordan
During an interview, Villeneuve mentioned that one of his demands was to film in an actual desert. The rocky scenes depicting the planet’s landscapes were shot in Wadi Rum. It is a vast protected area in Jordan.
This location is where Paul Atreides and his Bene Gesserit mother Lady Jessica find refuge. This is after they escape the Harkonnen attack on House Atreides. Wadi Rum features striking red sand dunes. Wadi Rum transports viewers to the Fremen sietches (villages).
Exploring Wadi Rum promises an unforgettable experience. Travelers can opt for a jeep or a hike through these dunes.
Liwa Oasis, United Arab Emirates
Scenes depicting the vast desert with sandworms were filmed in the Liwa Desert. It is located in theUnited Arab Emirates.
The renowned 5-star Qasr Al Sarab Resort is situated in the midst. It served as a base for hosting film crews.
Additionally, there is a 300-meter-tall Moreeb Dune nearby. It is located in the area known as the “Empty Quarter.’ The stunning aerial footage for Arrakis was filmed here. Villeneuve and the entire cast and crew returned for “Dune: Part Two.” Some of these dunes exceed 600 feet tall. They are on the edge of Rub’ Al Khali. It is the world’s largest uninterrupted desert.
Having a personal vehicle is essential for transportation in Liwa. While there’s limited hitchhiking, it’s not reliable. Camping is a popular activity in Liwa Oasis. Tourists can pitch their tents under the starry sky. They can wake up to breathtaking sunrise views over the sand dunes. Camel trekking is also on the cards.
Stadlandet, Norway
Caladanis the homeworld of House Atreides. It was filmed in Norway. The Western Norway Film Commission stated that the island is home to only a few residents and a herd of goats. However, Caladan will not feature in Part II.
The scene where Paul watches his last sunset before departing for Arrakis was filmed here on the Stad. It is also called the Stadlandet Peninsula.
This location is situated near the westernmost point of Norway. It is along the breathtaking Nordfjord Coast. The dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and tranquil fjords in the area perfectly capture the raw beauty of Caladan. Visitors can explore hiking trails. They can take boat tours to immerse themselves in the stunning natural surroundings.
The coastline near Norway’s Western Cape and Stad is rugged. It is renowned for its strong currents and unpredictable weather. During summer, the conditions become milder. This creates an ideal opportunity to explore the Stadlandet peninsula via sea kayak.
Teotihuacan archaeological complex, Mexico
The indigenous residents of the fortress city on Arrakis draw inspiration from Muslim culture. The Arrakeen Palace atop it bears resemblance to Mexico’s Teotihuacan archaeological complex.
Although Dune wasn’t filmed at Teotihuacan, it has a striking similarity to the Arrakeen Palace. The Teotihuacan Complex is an ancient Mesoamerican archaeological site. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. It welcomes visitors daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Altivole, Italy
In Dune 2, the Emperor’s quarters scenes were shot at the Brion Tomb, Altivole. It is a town in Italy’s Veneto region.
This tomb was designed by the famous architect Carlo Scarpa. It was finished in 1978. It is seen as a masterpiece of postmodernist architecture. The tomb combines concrete structures with the natural environment.
Scenes featuring Princess Irulan and Reverend Mother Mohiam in July 2022 were shot here. The location was utilized for Kaitain scenes. This was the first time a movie was shot here.
The tomb is open to the public. It consists of several buildings. Visitors can enter a chapel surrounded by a moat via stepping stones. They will also get to see stunning Chinese art at the entrance. A reflecting pool with vegetation adds to its beauty.
Near a peaceful garden, you’ll find two tombs. One is for Giuseppe and Onorina Brion. The other is for their family members. Along with it is a white marble marker bearing Scarpa’s name.
Namibia, Africa
A small team, including Villeneuve and Anya Taylor-Joy, ventured to Africa to film a secret scene. Atlas of Wonders stated it might be a sequence filmed at the Namib Sand Sea, Namibia.
This area is one of the rare locations where sand dunes stretch to the coastline. This results in a breathtaking landscape. Here, the desert meets the sea.
